China Votes against Renewal of U.N. Force in Macedonia
China on Thursday voted against a draft resolution which proposes the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP), saying that the U.N. peacekeeping operations, including the preventive missions, "should not be open-ended."
In explaining the Chinese stand after the vote, Qin Huasun, Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, said, "We have always maintained that U.N. peacekeeping operations, including preventive deployment missions, should not be open-ended." "There is no need to further extend the mandate of UNPREDEP," Qin said.
China sees it unnecessary for the mandate renewal because the situation in Macedonia "has apparently stabilized in the past few years, its relations with neighboring countries have been improved," Qin said, adding that peace and stability in Macedonia "has not been adversely affected by developments in that region."
