PM: Bright Future Ahead for Sino-Russian Economic Cooperation

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Friday that Sino-Russian trade and economic cooperation will advance to a brand new level as long as both sides work together to give full play to advantages in their complementary economies.

Zhu, addressing a luncheon with about 100 Russian business leaders, expressed confidence that such cooperation will be further strengthened under the bilateral strategic partnership of cooperation based on equality and mutual trust and oriented toward the 21st century.

The Chinese premier is Moscow on a four-day official visit, his first to Russia since assuming premiership last March.

He met Thursday with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and held the fourth regular meeting between the premiers of the two countries together with his Russian counterpart, Yevgeny Primakov.

Zhu said President Yeltsin's remarks on the bright future of bilateral trade and economic cooperation will give a fresh impetus to the development of such cooperation.

The premier said his cordial, candid and substantial talks with Primakov also yielded broad consensus on cooperation in various areas, especially in economy and trade.

The two sides signed 11 documents on oil, natural gas, electricity, transportation and regional cooperation at the end of the premiers' meeting.

Friday's luncheon was hosted by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Maslyukov.

He said Zhu's visit has been a complete success as both sides have settled many problems and opened up cooperation in such new areas as direct investment, joint production of household electric appliances and distribution of consumer goods.

Premier Zhu said Russia commands top superiority in high-tech areas such as space and that as long as the two sides trust each other and strengthen cooperation, such superiority will lay a good foundation for the speedy growth of economic and trade collaboration.

He said the two premiers have reached sincere understanding in this regard.
