Extension of UN Peacekeeping Mission in Macedonia Not Necessary

The UN peacekeeping force has completed its designated mission in Macedonia and there is no need for an extension there, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said in Beijing on February 25.

The internal situation in Macedonia has been basically stabilized and its relations with neighbors have been improved. It has neither been affected by what has happened in Yugoslavia, Zhang said in a regular news briefing.

She pointed out that facts have proved that the preventative peacekeeping mission the Security Council bestowed on the UN troops there has been fulfilled. She praised the UN troops as having played a vigorous role in Macedonia. "The UN is faced with a serious financial crisis and the limited resources of the UN should be used in places with more urgent need," she stressed. "There is no need to extend the preventative peacekeeping mission of the UN troops in Macedonia."
