Zhu Rongji Holds Talks With Primakov
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and his Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov held talks in Moscow yesterday. The two premiers exchanged views concretely and deeply on mutual-relation and issues of common concern.
This was also the first meeting between Zhu and Primakov as premiers.
Zhu thanked the Committee of Regular Meetings between Chinese and Russian Prime Ministers, led by State Councilor Wu Yi on the Chinese side and First Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Maslyukov on the Russian side.
The committee had made a full preparation for the fruitful meeting between the two prime ministers, Zhu said.
The committee held its third meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, one day before Zhu's arrival.
Zhu said that the two sides had reached consensus on all the questions discussed, which, in his words, reflected the level of relations between the two countries.
Practice had proved that the decision by Presidents Jiang and Yeltsin to establish a strategic partnership was "wise and in the fundamental interest of both peoples," Zhu said.
Praising the healthy and stable increase in bilateral ties, Zhu expressed a deep belief that the Sino-Russian strategic partnership would enter the new century steadily and would be filled with new content continuously.
China was ready to make unremitting efforts in this respect, Zhu said.
One of the purposes of his current visit was to push forward cooperation in specific fields including economic and trade areas, Zhu said.
Both sides had realized that economic and trade cooperation was a weak point in bilateral relations, Zhu said. However, there was great potential in this field, he added.
The two sides had discussed new fields and forms of co-operation during this visit, Zhu said, saying that this would raise good prospects for bilateral co-operation, especially in economic and trade matters.
Primakov said that Yeltsin was very satisfied with his meeting with Zhu in the morning.
Describing Zhu's visit as "successful," Primakov said that it was a "milestone" in Russia-China relations.
As the relationship of mutual understanding and co-operation between Russia and China had a solid foundation, it would be reinforced continuously, Primakov said.
After the talk, Zhu and Primakov attended the signing ceremony of 11 documents on cooperation in economic and trade fields, science and technology, energy and transportation.
There were also agreements signed on co-operation between China's provinces and Russia's regions.
Zhu also met Chairman of the Federation Council (Upper House) Yegor Stroyev in a separate meeting yesterday.
