Yeltsin: Time to Build Edifice of Russia-China Ties
Russian President Boris Yeltsin said Thursday that it is time to build the edifice of Russia- China ties as he and his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin have already laid the foundation for bilateral bonds.
Yeltsin made the remark while meeting with visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji in the Kremlin.
Yeltsin said the Russia-China strategic partnership of cooperation initiated by him and Jiang is unique in the world and that all the agreements reached by the two presidents should be implemented in earnest.
China has made positive efforts to implement the accords and Russia should act likewise, Yeltsin said.
He told the Chinese premier that Russia will stage grand ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries so as to make Russia-China friendship more cherished by the two peoples.
Zhu conveyed Jiang's cordial regards for Yeltsin and gave the Russian president a picture of him and Jiang taken last November at their first informal summit in Moscow.
Yeltsin said the picture, signed by Jiang, calls to mind the sweet memories of his meeting with the Chinese president. He asked Zhu to extend his best wishes to President Jiang.
The Chinese premier, who arrived in Moscow Wednesday on a four-day official visit, will hold talks with his Russian counterpart, Yevgeny Primakov, later Thursday in the fourth regular meeting between the premiers of the two countries.
Zhu, who is here on his first visit to Russia since assuming premiership last March, said his trip is aimed at facilitating the implementation of agreements reached by Jiang and Yeltsin and boosting the bilateral strategic partnership of cooperation based on equality and mutual trust.
The Chinese premier expressed confidence that his talks with Primakov on mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, particularly in trade and economy, will yield new results and agreements.
Zhu said there is still great potential for further developing bilateral economic cooperation, adding that both sides would certainly bring the cooperation to a higher stage of development as long as they bring into full play their respective advantages and complement each other's deficiencies.
Zhu said Jiang welcomes Yeltsin's planned visit to China later this year for their second informal summit.
Yeltsin said he is looking forward to the meeting.
