Foreign Minister On China's Stand on Kosovo Issue
China opposes military action against Yugoslavia, a sovereign state, because that will be a gross infringement upon the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of the international laws.
Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan made the remarks when conferring with Slobodan Unkovic, Yugoslavian ambassador to China, in Beijing February 24.
During the meeting, Tang expounded China's stand on the Kosovo issue.
"Military action is detrimental to the final solution to the problem and would also cut the peace negotiations which have already seen certain development in halfway," he said, adding that the action could bring disastrous outcome to the stability and people's life in the region.
The Chinese foreign minister said that China has been concerned about the peace talks on Kosovo issue held in Rambouillet of France and noticed the progress in the process made by relevant parties through patient dialogs.
Tang said that the Chinese government always advocates that the Kosovo issue is an internal affair of Yugoslavia and the problem can be solved only through peaceful negotiations on the basis of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yugoslavia while ensuring the lawful rights and interests of all ethnic groups in Kosovo.
He stressed: "such method is the only effective and right path to resolve the problem and is conductive to the regional peace and stability."
He told the ambassador that "We called on the international community and all relevant sides in Yugoslavia to continue seeking ways for a political solution with sense and patience for the sake of all ethnic groups in Kosovo and the regional peace and stability."
Unkovic said that the Yugoslavian government highly values China's principled stand on the Kosovo issue and that the Yugoslavian government will continue its efforts to find a political solution to the problem through dialogs.
