Chinese Premier Arrives in Moscow for Official Visit
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived in Moscow Wednesday for a four-day official visit to Russia at the invitation of Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov.
During the visit -- his first to Russia since assuming office as premier last March, Zhu is scheduled to meet with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and hold talks with Primakov for the fourth regular meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries.
The premiers' discussions will be centered on expanding trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and seeking common development.
Premier Zhu and his entourage, including his wife Lao An, Deputy Secretary-General Shi Xiushi of the State Council and Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yingfan, were greeted at the Vnukovo-2 Airport by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Maslyukov, Russian Ambassador to China Igor Rochachev, Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi, and Chinese Ambassador to Russia Wu Tao.
Wu was among the other members of Zhu's entourage, including Minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission Zeng Peiyan, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng, Minister in charge of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense Liu Jibin and Minister of Railways Fu Zhihuan, who arrived in Moscow Monday to make final preparations for the Chinese premier's Russia visit.
During Zhu's trip, which will also take him to St. Petersburg, Russia's second largest city, the Chinese premier will meet with Russian Federation Council Speaker Yegor Stroyev and Russian business leaders.
While China and Russia have maintained a rapid growth of relations in recent years, bilateral trade volume has dropped due to repercussions of the Asian financial crisis and other factors.
According to Chinese customs statistics, Sino-Russian trade fell to US$5.48 billion last year, down by 10.5 percent from the 1997 level.
Both sides have expressed confidence that the regular meeting of the prime ministers will promote the growth of economic and trade cooperation.
