Construction Is Bustling at 3 Gorges Project

Engineering work is busily going on at the 3 Gorges Project. 103,400 villagers have been resettled in the first stage from 1993-1997. 1998 is the second phase for the resettlement . Up to the end of October 1998, Chongqing considered an vital city to carry out the resettlement has spent 1.932 billion for this purpose and 49322 people have been resettled by the city. And 195 enterprises have been moved.

The project area is densely populated, but barren land for reclamation is scarce, presenting a difficult problem for the resettlement. Specialists say that should more people could be migrated, the eco-economic ambience would be better in the 3 Gorges area.

40% investment for the 3 Gorges project is earmarked for the resettlement. Enough money has arrived. A new city seat was completed for Zigui County in Hubei on the Yangtze River bank at the end of last September. And two other city seats have not yet decided. The resettlement is crucial to the whole project.

Up to the end of last August, 35.67 billion yuan had been put into the project. 162.25 million cu m of stone and earth had been excavated. And 5.97 million cu m of cement had been poured. The second-phase is vital and most difficult for the whole project. By 2003, water will be 135 m deep in the reservoir, the first group of generating units will supply power and a permanent sluice gate will be open to traffic. Deputy general engineer Gao Jiazhu said that generally the quality of the project is good and can fit the requirements of the design. Yuan Guolin, deputy general manager of the Project Development Corp, has paid attention to the negative effects of the project such as the silting problem and river banks to be scoured on the lower reaches. Premiere Zhu Rongji visited the project on December 29 last year and demanded best quality of the project.
