Commentary: "Bus Diplomacy" Heads Toward Future

At the invitation of Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee arrived in Pakistan's second biggest city of Lahore by bus February 20, which was the first visit by an Indian prime minister in a decade. The "Bus Diplomacy" between the two countries is conspicuous.

Sharif and Vajpayee held informal and formal talks during this summit, and the two sides inked the Lahore Declaration, Joint Statement and a Memorandum of Understanding.

At a joint press conference of the two prime ministers, Sharif said that the Pak-India summit talks have been "substantive and wide-ranging", and results of these talks are of wider and far-reaching positive impact.

Vajpayee said that "Jammu and Kashmir is one of the issues we are discussing within the framework of our composite dialog. We will negotiate with sincerity on this and on all other issues."

News media of Pakistan and India all spoke highly of the fruit of this "Bus Diplomacy", calling it to be of historic meaning.

The consensus and results of the Pak-India talks are positive to eliminate the tense situation between the two nations and promote the regional peace and stability. Due to historic reasons, Pakistan and India had been confronted each other for half a century, which cost much to the two governments and peoples.

India and Pakistan all launched nuclear tests last May, which significantly changed the security situation of the two countries and South Asia, and even influenced the world security environment. Thus, the efforts of the two leaders on solving disputes through diplomatic methods are welcomed and appreciated by the two peoples and the international community.

However, it is unrealistic to solve many questions through one or two summits of the two prime ministers. For example, in this summit, the two leaders did not reach any concrete document on the Kashmir issue, which is the core obstacle to the normalization of the two nations' relations. Opposing opinions on this summit were existing in Pakistan and India. Such as the big scale of demonstration of Pakistan's religious groups prior to and during the Indian Prime Minister's visit. Some senior Indian officials and ordinary people opposed Vajpayee's tour of Pakistan. These show that time is needed to completely solve the divergence and disputes between the two countries.

Fortunately, the two leaders have realized that "creating a peaceful and stable environment is in line with the top interests of the two nations". It is just like what Prime Minister Sharif said, "We must bring prosperity to our peoples." Vajpayee also pointed out that "We have to work together to usher in a new era of trust and confidence".
