Tung Says the Hong Kong Economy Expected to Recover
Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China called on the Hong Kong people to remain united and work toward a common goal of building a better Hong Kong for all the citizens. He also noted that he was convinced that the coming new year will be better than the past year and the Hong Kong economy will begin to recover slowly.
Speaking at a Spring Festival reception at the Government House February 22, Tung said that during the 20 months since Hong Kong returned to China, Hong Kong has successfully moved forward under the concept of "one country, two systems" with the full support of the central government.
While Hong Kong has been deeply affected by the unprecedented financial turmoil that has hit Hong Kong and the rest of Asia and many parts of the world, the strong drive of the Hong Kong people and the HKSAR government and the steady growth of the economy of China's mainland have enabled Hong Kong people to overcome the challenges, Tung said.
"I am confident that we will emerge in a much better shape and forge ahead into a brighter future," he said.
