Symbol Designed to Mark Macao Return
The State Council's Information Office recently joined the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in presenting a special symbol featuring the Arabic number "99" to indicate China's resumption of exercise of sovereignty over Macao later this year.
A symbol in the upper left-hand corner resembles an auspicious cloud, which indicates the number "19" to complete the Year 1999.
The red and green numbers represent the principle of "one country, two systems," with red being the color of the national flag of the People's Republic of China and green the color of the regional flag for the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR). The emblem of the MSAR is inlaid in the green number.
An official representing the two offices said the symbol will mainly be displayed at formal occasions celebrating Macao's return, including meetings, forums, exhibitions and performances. The symbol will also appear on souvenirs approved by the two offices.
The Jingang Information Exchange Center will be responsible for managing affairs related to the use of the symbol.
