Schroeder Vows Tough Line on Kurdish Extremists

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder vowed to take a tough line on Kurdish extremist violence Wednesday after Israeli security guards shot dead three Kurdish protesters trying to storm the Israeli consulate in Berlin.

"Those who live here are welcome if they adhere to law and order," said Schroeder. "Those who violate the law must leave the country."

Schroeder, who spoke to reporters in Schwerin, said he regretted the deaths of the three Kurds but stressed the Turkish-Kurdish conflict was not an issue which could be fought out in Germany.

"We cannot tolerate conflicts being played out on German streets which are not even our conflicts," he said.
