Philips Confident of Chinese Market
In an interview with a People's Daily reporter in Shanghai, Philips President Cor Boonstra said that his corp is part of China and expects to improve the quality of the life of the Chinese people, thus testifying to the Philips being a top-notch enterprise in China.
"Philips has deeply rooted in China," he said. In 1998, Philips ran 25 equity joint ventures and solely owned enterprises in China scattering in Beijing, Hongkong, Shanghai an Guangtong . The 25 enterprises boast investment totaling US$ 10 billion. Its investment is expected to be added this year. It runs over 3000 retail outlets in China with staff and workers totaling 18000. Its retail sales came to US$ 4.68 billion, an increase of 36% over a year earlier. He noted that his corp has promised to shifted its hi-tech to China to help China's standardization of the electronic industry.
Philips has also given support to sports and other cultural undertakings in China. It has supported 4 soccer seasons and invited renowned world symphonic orchestras to China.
To widen its business dimensions in China, the president said that his corp has kept in touch with Chinese universities and colleges for the purpose of drawing Chinese talents into Philips. He disclosed that Philips is discussing a business framework with the Chinese government to introduce hi-tech into China.
