Premier Zhu Spends Spring Festival with Flood Victims in Hubei
Premier Zhu Rongji toured Hubei Province to celebrate the Lunar New Year with local flood victims.
He extended season's greetings to policemen in the city of Wuhan on the morning of February 16 before going to visit the 1,600 flood victims in Zhongbao village, which was totally destroyed by last summer's floods.
"President Jiang Zemin and other Party and state leaders are deeply concerned about your life during the winter season. Today, we feel relieved after seeing that you have all moved into new houses," he told the villagers.
Premier Zhu arrived in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, on Monday afternoon and went directly from the airport to the Wuhan Iron and Steel Works to join those who were working on the holiday.
On Monday, he also met with heroes and relatives of those who lost their lives fighting the floods last year, laid off workers, and retirees.
He noted that the central government allocated tens of billions of yuan last year to repair flood damage, dredge lakes and rivers, and build water conservancy projects.
He added that the central government will invest tens of billions of yuan more into this work this year.
"All localities must use the funds properly and effectively, and not divert these funds to other uses. They must concentrate resources on completing construction of dams and embankments and guarantee engineering quality," he said.
