Primakov: Yeltsin Should Not Step Down
Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov Saturday reiterated his opposition to the idea that President Boris Yeltsin should step down before his term expires in 2000.
He said Yeltsin should remain in the post to ensure social stability and smooth parliamentary elections this year.
After attending the seventh conference of the non-government Council on Foreign and Defense Policies, Primakov told reporters that there were people intent on creating discord between the presidential staff and the government and between the government and the president.
Primakov defended his crusade against economic crimes, saying crackdown on crimes would strengthen social unity rather than result in social division.
Participants discussed measures to drag the country out of the economic crisis.
