Pak, Indian Congressmen Call for Steps to Avoid Nuke Disaster
A two-day conference of Pakistan and Indian parliamentarians, the first ever, concluded in Islamabad Saturday, urging their governments to take all possible steps to avoid an accidental nuclear catastrophe.
The conference, attended by some 100 law-makers from the two nations, issued a joint statement, underscoring the need for efforts to achieve the goal of a weapon-free world.
"Governments should be asked to agree to a dialogue on nuclear issue with intent of decreasing tensions and controlling an arms race in the sub-continent," said the statement.
It said the on-going foreign secretary-level dialog between Pakistan and India should be enhanced.
The law-makers applauded the upcoming visit by Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to Pakistan scheduled for February 20 to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
