China Reports Rising Tax Revenues

China's January tax revenues reached 81.84 billion yuan, up 26.6 percent from the same month in 1998.

The figure accounted for 8.7 percent of the projected 1999 tax revenues, according to a report released by the State Administration of Taxation.

The report attributed the upward momentum to the stable domestic economic performance and expanded revenue sources, as well as the consistent efforts of taxation departments nationwide to tighten controls over tax collection.

Most tax items, including value-added, consumption, enterprise and personal income taxes, grew by an average 30 percent, with various items approaching 100 percent growth, according to the report. It also pointed out that tax revenues for major industries, including tobacco petroleum, liquor, textile and coal sectors, grew by over 40 percent.

China collected industrial and commercial tax revenues totaling 855.2 billion yuan in 1998, with this year's target set at 946 billion yuan.
