UN Launches Appeal for Post-Flood Relief in China ĦĦĦĦThe United Nations System in China urged in a new appeal February 10 the international community to join the Chinese government in post-flood relief and reconstruction efforts. ĦĦĦĦThe first UN appeal, issued on September 23, 1998. solicited emergency relief and initial rehabilitation assistance for flood victims. The appeal raised close to US$73 million by January 31, 1999. The Chinese government and UN used the funds to provide relief in the form of shelters, food, water supplies, sanitation facilities, disease-control services, seed and fertilizer and the construction of schools.
