Li Ruihuan, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, expressed in Beijing February 8 his satisfaction with the smooth development of Sino-Uruguayan relations in a meeting with Jaime Mario Trobo, president of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay.
Li said that the last decade has witnessed the advancement of friendly ties between the two countries which share common views on many international issues.
To consolidate bilateral cooperation in various fields is not only in the interests of the two peoples, but also is in keeping with the trend of development in the world, Li added.
He said he appreciated the Uruguayan government's adherence to the One China policy, its opposition to the independence of Taiwan, and its support of the Chinese government on the issue of human rights.
Trobo said that since the two countries established diplomatic relations 10 years ago, great progress has been made in bilateral cooperation in various fields.
He said that the two countries, on the basis of sound political ties, should advance trade and economic cooperation in order to expand the fields for bilateral cooperation.
As an important member of the South American Common Market, Uruguay would like to push forward Uruguay-China relations on the basis of mutual respect. Trobo also said that the Uruguayan parliament is committed to consolidating Uruguay's friendship with other countries, and his current China visit is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, cementing exchanges between the congresses of Uruguay and China, and promoting Uruguay-China ties.
