Beijing Mayor Urges Stability
Beijing mayor Jia Qinglin said on February 5 in Beijing that maintaining political and social stability is the number one task as the capital gears up for celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic later this year.
Jia said that the Communist Party of China Central Committee will hold grand celebrations in October, which will greatly inspire the people to devote themselves to the modernization drive.
"To ensure that every program is carried out smoothly, we will take steps to crack down on crimes of violence, gang crimes, drug smuggling and thievery with tough hands," he told those attending the annual municipal People's Congress which opened today.
Jia asked the people to be on the alert for subversive and splittist activities by "overseas hostile forces."
The mayor also urged the creation of a clean environment in the city. Air pollution and traffic jams should be targeted, and 2.6 million square meters of illegal buildings will be dismantled, he said.
He asked the people to ensure the quality of the 67 new projects designed for the October gala, many of which are still under construction.
