Chinese President Meets U.S. Journalists

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said on February 5 that news media will play an important and positive role in increasing exchanges and cooperation between China and the international community.

Jiang met with Norman Pearlstine, editor-in-chief of US-based Time Inc. and noted that China needs to enhance exchanges with the international community in order to further promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

He added that China has not only scored remarkable achievements in economic development, but has also witnessed the rapid development of its cultural and journalism sectors since the introduction of reform and opening some 20 years ago.

The president expressed his appreciation for Time's commitment to advancing friendship with China and enhancing the mutual understanding between peoples in the two nations.

Time will sponsor the Fortune Global Forum in Shanghai in September. Jiang pointed to the significance of the forum which will be held shortly before the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Pearlstine praised China's monumental achievements during the past 20 years of reform and opening.

He said Time is committed to offering just and objective reports on China, as well as to promoting improvements and further development in Sino-U.S. relations.
