Chinese Media Briefed of Social Security Situation

China will accelerate its anti-crime campaign this year in order to safeguard social stability and protect the order of the socialist market economy, according to Wang Shengjun, secretary-general of the Political Science and Law Committee under the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

Wang made the remarks during a briefing on national public security held Febuary 4 by the aforementioned committee and the CPC's Comprehensive Public Security Management Committee.

The 1999 priorities of the two committees will focus on ferreting out potential factors which could possibly create social instability, clamping down on violent crimes which endanger public security and striking a telling blow against smuggling and foreign exchange fraud.

Priority will center on maintaining public order in rural areas in order to ensure economic development, as well as mobilizing social forces to prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency.

The committees called for the enhanced management of itinerant population and the mass movement of farmers in flood-stricken areas to cities.

Officials at all levels are responsible for public security and their work performance will be assessed closely in terms of situations in their realm of responsibility.
