Undertaking Noble Historical Mission 　　This is the third article by Our Commentator concerning the study of Comrade Jiang Zemin's speech delivered at the meeting marking the 20th anniversary of the convocation of the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Following is abridged translation of the article. 　　Jiang's speech made at the above-mentioned meeting sums up the basic experiences of our Party in leading reform, opening-up and the modernization drive, looks forward to the magnificent course along which our state is moving toward the new century, and calls on the whole Party to work conscientiously, engage in hard struggle and live up to the expectations of the people. Jiang emphasized, "Unite and lead the people of all nationalities of the country to advance on the crest of a victory, constantly make progress till achieving the goal of socialist modernization-this is our Party's noble historical mission." 　　The great mission of our times is that we will basically build up a powerful, socialist modern country after decades of efforts. To accomplish this great mission, it is necessary to adhere to the Party's basic theory, basic line, basic program and basic experience, make pioneering efforts and work conscientiously with one heart and one mind for the prosperity of the country. Communist Party members at large, particularly leading cadres at all levels, should exhibit a stronger sense of historical mission and reinforce their confidence in victory, at the same time, they should be well aware of the seriousness of the situation and the arduousness of tasks, inspire their revolutionary spirit, improve their quality, work hard and undertake the noble historical mission more consciously., Only when they work wholeheartedly for the interests of the people, identify themselves with the masses and combine their strength with that of the masses, can Communist Party members and leading cadres become powerful and invincible. We should show concern for the well-being of the masses, listen to their voices, conscientiously safeguard their interests, guide and protect their initiative and creativity and constantly pool the strength of the masses. This means that we should, in line with the arrangements of the Party Central Committee, further unify the thinking of all Party members on the basis of the spirit of the 15th National Congress of the CPC, embody the strength of the people of the whole country in various tasks set by the 15th National Congress of the CPC, and constantly push forward the modernization drive.
