Zhu Rongji Stresses Construction Quality

  Premier Zhu Rongji recently urged all departments and localities to adopt strict measures to ensure the quality of construction projects which are vital to China's economy.

  Zhu called for massive campaign against corruption in the construction sector, and he specifically cited the frequent accidents resulting from poor quality.

  Speaking at a national conference on construction quality, Zhu said the Construction Law must be implemented and audits must be expanded to uncover individuals involved in corruption. The conference was held in Beijing, the Chinese capital, on February 1- 2.

  Zhu said corrupt officials must be severely disciplined and prosecuted according to law. He also called for more training to enhance the professional skills of construction workers.

  Zhu pointed to the importance of reforming the construction market and rectifying the market order, and stressed that bids for construction projects must be conducted in an open, just and fair manner in order to ensure that the most qualified construction units are selected.

  Vice-premiers Wu Bangguo and Wen Jiabao attended the conference along with State Councilor Wang Zhongyu.
