Anniversary of Jiang Zemin's Eight-Point Proposition on Reunification Marked

China's non-communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce held a forum in Beijing on January 29 to mark the fourth anniversary of Jiang Zemin's speech on reunification and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Message to Taiwan Compatriots.

Luo Haocai, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), presided over the meeting.

Luo, who is also chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, said the Message to Taiwan Compatriots issued by the National People's Congress Standing Committee on New Year's Day in 1979 had a significant and far-reaching impact on China's reunification process.

Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposition on the Taiwan question fully reflects the sincerity and determination of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to develop cross-straits relations and promote reunification, he said, noting that it has become a guiding document for solving the Taiwan question.

Zhang Kehui, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, said cross-straits relations have undergone great changes over the past two decades.

As a party composed of Taiwan compatriots living on the Chinese mainland and one that participates in state and governmental affairs, the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League has been actively implementing the principle of "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" and Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposition, Zhang said.

The party has greatly increased exchanges with people from all walks of life in Taiwan, and has boosted the development of cross-straits relations, he added.

Li Ganliu, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, said his party has maintained extensive ties with Taiwan, and has done a great deal for peaceful reunification.

He pledged that his party will further boost economic, trade, scientific and cultural exchange between both sides of the Taiwan Straits, fight against separatism and safeguard the unity of the motherland.
