Doje Cering, minister of civil affairs, said at the Nanjing Military Area Command of the PLA that the PLA troops waged a mighty and courageous fight against serious flooding last summer, demonstrating their daring spirit of heroism.
"The great victory over the floods proves that the unity between the army and the civilians is the source that will enable us to conquer every challenge," stressed Doje.
He called on all people to unite in the effort to promote economic development and make contributions to the current modernization of China.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs spent nearly four billion yuan for 700,000 demobilized soldiers in 1998, and a total of 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions have established funds to support the army and help soldiers' families.
