Corrupt Official Receives Death Sentence

The death sentence was passed on January 27 on a Nanning government official in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, south China, for accepting bribes and accumulating "a huge amount of wealth from unidentified sources".

The intermediate people's court in the city of Yulong also stripped Li Chenglong 46, former deputy mayor of Guigang, of all political rights.

Investigations by the court showed that during 1991-96 when Li served as Party secretary of Yuling County, he accepted bribes totaling 3.75 million yuan as well as US$25,000 and HK$10,000 from 21 individuals and organizations.

When he was arrested in December 1996, his personal assets were found to be over 16.1 million yuan, US$25,300, in addition to various amounts of HK dollars, Australian dollars and a selection of jewelry. Li could not account for more than 6.5 million yuan.

The court confiscated 100,000 yuan of Li's personal property and all money and gifts accrued from the bribes. His collection of porcelain, padauk furniture and other property including housing would be auctioned to make up the difference

More than 1,000 people attended the trial.
