Chinese President Meets WIPO Director-General

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Kamil Idris, director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in Beijing January 27.

The WIPO will continue to support Chinese intellectual property

institutions through developing human resources, enhancing legislative framework and other efforts, the WIPO leader told the press after his meeting with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

"The immediate short-term project (for the WIPO) with China is to give specific training courses for specialists," said Idris.

To fulfill his commitment, the director-general on January 26 donated a range of publications, including information databases and legal books, to China's Intellectual Property Training Center which educates high-level professionals in the field.

The official emphasized the significant role that China could play in worldwide intellectual property protection, saying that China has become "a member of most of the international treaties of the WIPO, and has legislated in practically all areas of intellectual property."

However, he pointed out that "the most important challenge that remains for this country is to amend and modify legislation in order to meet newly established international obligations."

He also praised the Chinese government's recent efforts to crack down on piracy. "This is a very good campaign in the right direction because fighting piracy and counterfeit goods will, in the end, be in the social and economic interests of the country itself," he said.

The 170-nation-member WIPO urges countries throughout the world to earnestly protect intellectual property rights. China joined the organization in 1980 and has participated in 12 treaties under its jurisdiction.
