Israeli Parliament Prevents the Return of Golan Heights to Syria

The Israeli parliament gave its final approval Tuesday to a bill aimed to prevent the return of the Golan Heights to Syria by any Israeli government.

The bill, which passed its first reading in December, was ratified by a vote of 53 against 30 in the 120-seat Knesset, or Parliament, in its final reading.

Under the bill, any decision by the government to remove "Israeli law, jurisdiction and administration" from the Golan Heights would require the approval of at least 61 Knesset members and then the ratification of a national referendum.
