Centenary Birthday of Lao She Marked

February 3, 1999 is the centenary day of Lao She's birth, who is known as a celebrated Chinese literary giant both at home and abroad.

Lao She's literary portfolio includes a rickshaw boy, Beijingers in a lane during the invasion of China by Japanese troops, and tea-drinkers who eye-witnessed the vicissitudes of more than half a century.

With these characters, Lao conveyed his profound understanding of life's pains and his heartfelt concern for these miserable people whose lives were dictated by fate.

A series of academia and cultural activities are to be held in Beijing and Chongqing to commemorate the artist of the people. The Lao She Museum in Beijing and Beibei, Chongqing will be open then, taking on a new look after renovation.
