Chinese Vice-President Starts Ghanaian Tour
Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao arrived in Accra January 26 to start his three-day official visit to Ghana, the second leg of his 13-day four African-nation tour.
The Chinese vice-president came to Accra from Madagascar by a special plane as guest of Ghanaian Deputy President John Evans Attah Mills, who greeted Hu at the airport.
This is Hu's first trip to Africa.
In his written statement upon arrival, Hu said his current visit is to help increase the "brotherly and traditional friendship" between the two nations and expand the existing friendly cooperation.
He expressed the hope that this visit will serve to push bilateral friendly cooperative ties to a new high and contribute to the China-Ghana friendship.
In the long run, he continued, China and Ghana have fruitful cooperation in the political, economic, trade, cultural and educational sectors, as well as in international affairs.
The two peoples support and learn from each other and develop a profound feeling, Hu added.
Amid cheers and local dances, some other senior Ghanaian officials also went to the airport to welcome the Chinese vice-president.
Accompanying Hu on the current African visit are Vice-Foreign Minister Ji Peiding and some other Chinese officials.
Later Tuesday, Hu is scheduled to visit the cemetery in memory of Ghana's first President Kwame Nkrumah and attend a reception hosted by Mills.
Wednesday, Hu will call on Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings and confer with Mills.
After this visit, Hu will go to Cote d'Ivoire on January 28 to continue his African tour, in which South Africa will be the last leg.
