CPPCC Chairman Meets ROK and German Guests

* Li Ruihuan, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, said in Beijing January 26 that China should be able to draw on some of the economic-development experiences of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

During a meeting with Lee Soo-Sung, the former ROK prime minister, Li Ruihuan expressed his appreciation for the efforts Lee had made to promote Sino-ROK relations when he was prime minister.

The chairman also voiced his admiration for the hard-working spirit of the ROK people in the face of the Asian financial crisis, and said he believes that the ROK will certainly be able to overcome the current difficulties and return to the track of healthy development.

China has suffered the negative impact of the crisis as well and has taken its share of responsibility in a bid to ease the situation, fully demonstrating that the so-called "China threat" is totally groundless.

Lee Soo-Sung said ROK-China ties have witnessed rapid progress since the two countries forged diplomatic relations. He expressed pleasure at China's economic achievements and his admiration for China's responsible attitude in stabilizing its currency in face of the Asian economic crisis.

Lee is visiting China at the invitation of the CPPCC National Committee.

* CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan said that the growth of Sino-German relations serves both the fundamental interests of the two peoples and world peace and development.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with Hans-Dietrich Genscher, former German deputy chancellor and foreign minister in Beijing January 26.

He said that China is ready to make concerted effort with the German new administration to advance bilateral relations on the existing basis.

The 20th Century has witnessed both the rapid progress of human civilization and the frequent disasters, which has provided mankind with powers and experience to move forward, Li said.

Genscher said that China is playing an increasingly important role in the world that is moving toward multi-polarization. Germany hopes to maintain its closely cooperative relationship with China, he said.

Genscher is on a visit to China as guest of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
