Suspending Six Members' Qualification, Reforming Bidding Procedures
At the press conference held last night at the headquarter of Lausane, Switzerland, Samaranch, chairman of the executive committee of the IOC apologized openly for the Salt Lake bribery and declared decisions on dealing several members involved.
Samaranch announced suspension of six members' membership. Their future will be decided by a plenary session of IOC which will be held in March. According to IOC's regulation, dismissal of a member must be approved by a 2/3 majority.
Samaranch also said that the meeting place of the 2000 summer games and 2002 winter games would not be changed. But from 2006, IOC would make a substantial reform of the procedures for selecting a host-city. The executive committee proposed that a 15-member selection committee be set up in choosing the host-city. The committee should be composed of eight IOC members, three athletes, one representative from the International Winter Program Association and International Summer Program Association and National Olympic Committee respectively and chairman of the Selection Committee. Chairman of IOC will lead the work of the Selection Committee, but will not participate in voting. The plenary session of the IOC will discuss the proposal this March.
