Chinese Premier Meets with Bangladesh Foreign Minister

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing January 25 that consolidating and promoting relations with Bangladesh is the Chinese government policy.

In a meeting in the Great Hall of the People with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad, Zhu praised bilateral relations and thanked the Bangladesh government for its clear-cut stand in support of China on the issues of human rights, Taiwan, and Tibet.

He said that talks between China's Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and Azad have been successful and that they discussed a wide range of topics like bilateral relations. Last Thursday the two foreign ministers signed a governmental agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the two countries.

Zhu expressed the conviction that through concerted efforts, Sino-Bangladesh relations will move toward the next century and witness further progress.

Azad, who arrived in Beijing last Thursday, said the Bangladesh government attaches great importance to its traditional friendship with China and is devoted to developing friendly cooperation in various sectors.

He said that Bangladesh steadfastly supports China's just position on human rights, Taiwan and Tibet, and considers China a reliable friend and is grateful for its selfless assistance.
