Chinese Ambassador on Current Round of Talks on Korean Peninsula

The fourth session of the Four-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula has been mixed with progress and differences, said head of the Chinese delegation Ambassador Qian Yongnian in Geneva Friday.

Speaking at the end of the fourth session on Friday, he said that it was a significant progress that the procedures of the operation of the two subcommittees, respectively on the establishment of a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and tension reduction there, had been agreed upon.

"This has made necessary preparation for the discussion of substantive issues in future rounds of the talks," he said. "We are pleased with the agreement."

However, he cautioned, there are still wide differences among relevant parties on the issues such as how to establish a peace regime on the peninsula and how to reduce the tension there.

Qian said the Chinese side believed that to search for feasible ways, to narrow the differences, and to embark on solving the existing problems would be an important part in the next step.

"China, as one of the parties in the Four-Party Talks, will continue to play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula with full cooperation with other parties in an active, practical and constructive approach," he said.

The talks aiming to reach a lasting peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula were launched in December 1997 in Geneva. The four countries involved in the peace process include the People's

Republic of China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Korea, and the United States of America.
