Houghton on China 's Football
China national Olympic football team left for training in Guangzhou on January 19. In an interview, reporters asked Houghton whether he agrees with the view of Chinese coaches that China will have her football breakthrough on young players born from 1977 to 1980. He said that the national Olympic team preparing for peripheral Olympic Games will be the major force for the 2002 World Cup. He told reporters that young players in the team have great potential but they need time to prove themselves.
Houghton spoke specifically about his attitude toward media. He said: "I don't understand Chinese language, so I will not be disturbed by outsiders. This is an advantage my predecessors don't have. But I do really hope that outside views will not affect the unity of the team.
It is reported that the Olympic team is going to take part in the second international football invitational tournament in Vietnam.
