Obuchi: Japan Not to Interfere in Other Countries' Internal Affairs
Japan will not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries when it provides support to US forces in the event of emergencies in the areas surrounding Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi made the remarks Thursday at the plenary session of the House of Councilors.
He said Japan will stick to its basic policy of pure defense while providing the support.
The Japanese government maintains that Japan and the United States will cooperate in emergencies under the guidelines, which it says do not refer to a geographic concept, but a situational one.
The guidelines call on Japan to provide more active support to US forces during emergencies in undefined areas surrounding Japan.
