Nazarbayev Sworn in as Kazakh President
President-elect of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev was sworn into office on Wednesday in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan.
At the inauguration ceremony, Nazarbayev pledged to continue the present internal and external policies and make further efforts to consolidate the state's sovereignty and promote national unity.
He stressed that he, as head of state, will devote himself to two major tasks: raising living standards and advancing democratic reform and political stability.
Among those attending the inauguration were Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen, Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Kyrgyzstan President Askar Akayev and senior officials from Iran and Turkey.
Following the ceremony, Qian, who arrived Tuesday, and Nazarbayev exchanged views over developing Sino-Kazakh relations. Qian, on behalf of Chinese President Jiang Zemin, extended warm greetings to Nazarbayev on his re-election.
