Central Chinese Province Increasing Water- Control Facilities

Central China's Hubei Province, having learned a lesson from the devastating floods last summer, has increased work on water-control facilities.

It has got 7 million people and more than 70,000 machines working on the dykes and dams of the Yangtze River, moving 125 million cubic meters of earth and stone, Governor Jiang Zhuping says.

Hubei will set aside 235 million yuan for water-control work this year, which includes 50 million yuan saved by a central heating project, he says, and Hubei will find more channels to get investment for the work.

Jiang says they will make quality and high standards for water-control projects, with emphasis on scientific planning and the use of technology.

Hubei Province and its capital Wuhan had 8 flood peaks last summer. Millions of soldiers and civilians joined in the fight to protect the dykes.
