Tung vows to enhance advantages

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa promised on January 20 to reduce the region's business costs and expand investment in education and environmental protection.

He said the move will be made to improve Hong Kong's competitiveness and to help it surmount current economic difficulties.

Tung made the statement after a six and a half-hour closed-door discussion with members of his new International Advisory Council.

The SAR government will invest HK$235 billion (US$30.4 billion) in education in the following five years to train more skilled professionals, Tung said.

"And we will do a lot of work to improve our environment and sanitary conditions in the future," Tung said.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong will further fortify its status as a financial center in the Asia-Pacific region and will take effective measures to boost its tourism in coming years.

"We will turn Hong Kong into one of the most successful international cities in Asia and one of the most important cities in China," Tung said.

Expanding investment in infrastructural facilities, education, environment and sanitation will help provide more job opportunities, Tung said.

Hong Kong can transfer its processing industry to the vast mainland market and benefit from the mainland's sustained economic growth, Tung said.( via China Daily by Zheng Caixiong)
