New Round of Four-Party Talks on Korean Peninsula Begins
China hopes to see the formal launching of the two subcommittees agreed at the last session of the four-party talks on the Korean peninsula, the head of the Chinese delegation said in Geneva Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening meeting of the fourth plenary session of the four-party talks, Ambassador Qian Yongnian said that to start substantive work in accordance with the agreement reached last October would be the major task of the current session.
"We hope that a formal announcement will be made on the establishment of the two subcommittees and the commencement of their operation at today's plenary," Qian said.
"We will actively participate in the work of the subcommittees and put forward our propositions and proposals to facilitate the early establishment of a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, a reduction of tension and an early realization of lasting peace and stability there, while giving full consideration to the opinions of other parties," he said.
"At the same time, we hope that all parties will continue to make unremitting efforts on the basis of what has been achieved and work for further progress in the course of future talks through patient consultations in the spirit of starting from easy issues and moving step-by-step toward harder ones and seeking common ground while shelving differences", he said.
The Chinese side, he said, will fully cooperate with the other three parties in a positive, pragmatic and constructive manner so as to play its role in the effort to usher in the dawn of a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula at an early date.
At the opening session, Qian Yongnian of China, Kim Gye Guan of the DPRK, Park Kun-woo of South Korea, and Charles Kartman of the United States shook hands and expressed their wish for the success of the talks.
