China Makes Substantial Progress in Basic Researches
����China made a series of breakthroughs in basic scientific researches last year, as shown in the statistics by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
����An official with the Ministry said at a news conference in Beijing January 19 that the cloning of nerve deafness genes heads the list of basic research discoveries in China, and the finding of the world oldest flowering plant fossils and fossils of oldest animal groups ranks second. The fossils of the flowering plant date back to 145 million years.
����He said this is the first time that China chooses the annual top 10 major discoveries of basic scientific research. The move is to encourage more scientists to make more outstanding achievements in various basic research fields.
����Other major discoveries include advanced world level of quark mass comparative research, breakthrough in artificial quasi-crystal research, breakthrough in comprehensive research on Himalayas Mountain and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and two kinds of genetic-engineering anti-cancer pharmaceuticals for curbing growth of new blood vessels of cancer tissue.
����China ranked among the top 10 countries for the first time in terms of numbers of scientific papers published in foreign magazines.
