Beijing Launches Greening Campaign
Beijing Mayor Jia Qinglin announced today that 1999 has been designated "the greening year" for China's pollution-ridden capital.
The mayor said that the city has already reached its 2000 year target for 40 percent of Beijing's public areas to be covered with grass and trees. However, more trees are to be planted, as a per-capita Beijing citizen occupies an average of greenery of only about eight square meters, much less than the world average.
The face-lift campaign, according to observers, will support Beijing's program to bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.
