Xinjiang Muslims Celebrate Festival of Fast-Breaking

  Religious celebrities of all ethnic groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region gathered in Beijing January 18 at a tea party to mark the most important Muslim event, the festival of Fast-Breaking, which is to begin Tuesday.

  A leading official congratulated the Muslims for their festival on behalf of the regional government, saying that the region has enjoyed political stability, a unity of all nationalities and economic development, thanks to the efforts made by people of all nationalities in Xinjiang.

  An Imam in a local mosque said that stability is a common wish of all Muslims in the region, and the whole country as well.

  "It is the responsibility of religious celebrities in Xinjiang to contribute to the regional stability." he said.

  Artists of the Xinjiang Song and Dance Troupe Gave performances at the party.

  More than a dozen of ethnic groups in China believe in the Islamic religion, with a population of 17 million, many of them are in Xinjiang.
