Aggregate Iron and Steel Production Control Required

Following the policy spirit of the national economic conference held earlier in Beijing, the State Economic and Trade Commission lately called for aggregate control over the country's iron and steel production this year. By this is meant that with a cut in the 114.35 million ton steel output of 1998 steel produced at home is to demand a sales amount growth of 2 percentage points on domestic markets amounting, namely, to a market percentage of 92% by domestic iron and steel produced. With this there will be a profit amount of RMB$5 billion yuan to be achieved; no economic losses will be found by all large and medium-sized iron and steel enterprises in China; and no foreign steel types will be imported since the products are domestically produced. Morever, an annual export trade amount of 4 million tons of steel is to be developed.

According to Metallurgical Bureau Director Wang Wanbin, aggregate control over iron and steel production will by no means exclude development of iron and steel production in China. Contrarily, it marks the new way in upgrading China's iron and steel production.
