Chirac Meets Chinese Foreign Minister

  French President Jacques Chirac met with Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Friday in the Elysee presidential palace.

  Chirac and Tang positively evaluated the good development of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the results of cooperation in all fields between France and China.

  Chirac said that there exist some common stands between France and China, and that it is a fixed policy of the French authorities to develop and strengthen relations with China.

  He said that France is ready to work with China to seek new progress of the relations, especially in the field of economic cooperation and trade.

  Tang said that China pays great importance to its relations with France and appreciates the efforts made by Chirac in developing bilateral relations, which have seen a good momentum of development in the past several years.

  Chirac and Tang agreed that the international situation is experiencing a major and deep change and that the world is moving toward a multi-polar structure and is experiencing economic globalization.

  They noted that crises still exist in the world, although the forces in favor of peace are growing.

  They agreed that the role and authorities of the United Nations and in particular the UN Security Council should be strengthened in international cooperation aimed at maintaining peace.

  They also agreed that China and France should strengthen coordination and consultation over international issues and work together for establishing a new, just and fair international order in the political and economic fields.
