Iraqi Crisis

*France Wednesday unveiled its proposed new UN policy towards Iraq, which includes lifting the oil embargo in conjunction with a new arms control mechanism.

*Iraq rejects all the Arab and foreign initiatives to ease sanctions imposed on Iraq, said Iraqi Vice-President Taha Yassin Ramadan on Wednesday evening.

"If we accept these initiatives, the embargo will be a permanent one," said Ramadan at a press conference.

These initiatives aim to put restrictions on Iraq's imports and exports under continuous monitoring.

Instead Iraq demands the total lifting of the UN sanctions imposed on the country for its invasion of Kuwait in 1990, which touched off the 1991 Gulf War.

*US jet fighters attacked Iraqi air defense sites on Thursday for the fourth consecutive day in the northern no-fly zone, the Pentagon said.

An F-16 patrolling the no-fly zone fired a HARM missile after the plane was tracked by Iraqi radar, Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col Steve Campbell said.
