Tropical Plants Battling Freezing Weather In Southwest China

Some warm weather plants in the capital of China's Yunnan Province will have to brace themselves for another round of low temperature in the coming days.

Kunming is popularly known as the "Spring City" because of its warm weather. Many people here have never seen snow in their lives. But, a sudden drop in temperature and a heavy snowfall recently are posing a threat to some of the luxuriant plants here, especially tropical and subtropical ones that have been moved here in preparation for the World Horticulture Exposition that will open here in May.

At the most important exposition site, a third of the plastic-covered greenhouses collapsed under the weight of the newly-fallen snow and the branches of at least a hundred trees had cracked.

The provincial government has appealed to local army units for help and they have responded with 1,500 men who are helping remove the snow from the exposition's plants and more will immediately be billeted at the exposition site.

According to the local meteorology station, the temperatures are expected to drop considerably more, and one meteorologist commented that, "Anything could happen."

The exposition's organizers are trying everything possible to protect the precious plants and the trees.
