Chinese Premier Meets Greenspan
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Board of Governors of the US Federal Reserve System, in Beijing January 12.
Zhu briefed Greenspan on China's economic development in 1998. He said that the spread of the Asian financial crisis, the turmoil in the world financial market, and the unprecedented flooding last summer have adversely affected China's economy.
China, however, has stimulated its economic growth by taking active financial policies, a relevant currency policy of maintaining the value of the renminbi, and expanding the domestic demand, Zhu said.
Greenspan expressed admiration for China's economic achievements, and highly evaluated China's contribution to the Asian and the world economy by keeping its currency exchange rate stable.
He outlined the economic and financial development in the United States, and suggested that the two countries reinforce their co-operation in the financial sector.
