Chinese President Says Party Members Need To Keep on Learning

"Study, study and study again" is what Chinese President Jiang Zemin says members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) need to do for the 21st century.

Jiang was addressing senior CPC officials attending a seven-day financial training course at the CPC Central Committee's Party School January 11. The closing ceremony was presided over by Vice-President Hu Jintao, with members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's political Bureau Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Wei Jianxing, and Li Lanqing attending.

Jiang warned of the dangers of losing the support of the Chinese people if the Party fails to improve itself and keep up to date. As the ruling party of the largest socialist country on earth, the CPC must persist in combining the tenets of Marxism with the specific practice in China.

All CPC members must learn constantly and put into practice modern scientific theory and ideas to promote economic development and social progress in China.

He said that CPC members need to learn more about Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, and especially Deng Xiaoping Theory, and that this will help improve the political standards and the leadership of the Party.

Marxism is not an immutable and closed doctrine, he said, and Deng Xiaoping Theory has been proven to be contemporary Marxism in China and CPC members should learn how to use Deng's theory to solve problems creatively.

Leading officials at all levels should also acquire basic knowledge of a socialist market economy, modern finance and management, he said.

China faces new challenges that need to be solved with modern economic knowledge, he said, and pointed out that China got a good lesson about financial instability from the negative impact of the Asian financial crisis last year and the heavy floods last summer.

He concluded that science and technology will help promote economic development in China and the country needs an efficient way to make use of science and technology to turn scientific achievements into productive forces, while at the same time it is important for CPC members to learn from history and to bring up more young cadres.
